Test and tag is the in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment that plugs in: power tools, extension leads, power boards, kitchen appliances, computers and chargers. In Australia it is carried out to AS/NZS 3760. Eclipse provides test and tag for offices, warehouses, factories, construction sites and strata buildings across Sydney.
Why it matters
Damaged leads and faulty appliances cause electric shocks and fires. Test and tag is how a business shows it is managing that risk under its WHS obligations, and it is one of the first records an insurer or investigator asks for after an incident.
The right interval depends on the environment. AS/NZS 3760 sets typical intervals of 3 months on construction sites, 6 months in factories and workshops, and up to 5 years for office equipment that is not subject to flexing or abuse. What we do
- Visual inspection of each item for damage to plugs, leads, housings and strain relief
- Earth continuity and insulation resistance testing, with polarity checks on leads
- Testing of RCDs, both portable units and those on the switchboard
- Testing of variable speed drives (VSDs) where applicable
- Tagging each passed item with the test date and next due date
- Removing failed items from service and reporting them to you
We work through the site with minimal disruption, testing desks and workstations in sequence so staff lose access to equipment only for a few minutes. On industrial sites we coordinate with supervisors so tools are tested between jobs.
What you receive
You receive an asset register listing every item, its location, test results and next due date, plus a summary of failed items and recommended actions. We remind you before the next round is due, so testing does not lapse between audits. Failed items can often be repaired or replaced on the same visit if you approve it.
The register is also a useful management tool. It shows which areas generate the most failures, which leads are being replaced repeatedly and where equipment is being brought on site untested. Over time that helps you tighten your procedures, not just tick a box once a year.
Where it fits with our other trades
