Installing an EV charger is mostly an exercise in power supply. The charger itself mounts on a wall or a pedestal; the real work is making sure the building’s supply, switchboard and cabling can carry a heavy continuous load, often for hours at a time. Eclipse installs EV charging for workplaces, fleet depots, strata car parks and homes across Sydney.
Why planning matters
An EV charger draws significant current for long periods. Put several on a site that is already close to its limit and you risk nuisance tripping, overheated connections or a supply that cannot cope when the air conditioning is also running. Every new charger circuit also needs RCD protection, which older switchboards may not be able to provide.
For businesses and strata buildings the bigger question is the future. One or two chargers today can become ten in a few years. A little planning now, such as sizing the sub-main and leaving space in the board, avoids digging up the car park twice. In strata buildings, the owners corporation also needs clarity on how charging is metered and how costs are shared.
Fleet operators face a different question: when vehicles charge. A depot where every van plugs in at the end of the shift needs a very different design from a car park where staff charge on and off through the day. Understanding how the chargers will be used is what lets us size the installation correctly without overbuilding it.
What we do
- Review your supply, switchboard and existing loads to confirm available capacity
- Recommend charger locations, cable routes and the number of chargers the site can support
- Carry out any switchboard upgrades needed for capacity or RCD protection
- Install dedicated circuits and sub-mains sized for present and future charging
- Mount and connect wall-mounted or pedestal chargers, including charging outlets for fleets and staff
- Advise on load management options where several chargers share a limited supply
- Test and commission each charger
For homes, the process is simpler: we check the board, run a dedicated circuit to the garage or carport and install the charger you have chosen.
What you receive
You receive a certificate of compliance, test results for the new circuits and an updated switchboard schedule. For commercial and strata sites we also provide a short summary of the capacity used and what remains, so the next stage of charging can be planned properly.
Where it fits with our other trades
EV charging rarely sits on its own. A basement car park with chargers usually benefits from better CCTV coverage and controlled access, and a busy site may need its electrical load reviewed alongside new air conditioning plant. Because we handle electrical, mechanical and security, we can plan the whole site rather than one piece of it. See our strata and property page for how we work with owners corporations.
